Maria Loony Toons
You are the seeing (and 'seaing') of the Moon. A true love story in song and video.
I first saw and fell deeply in love with Maria in 1978, and we were together as a young couple, very much in love, from 1979-80.
I wrote to Maria in October 1980, “Probably loving you always.”
Maria still has the letter. She showed it to me in 2015.
I wrote this song in three days, 19-21 October 2019, and recorded it ‘live’ in September 2020.
Daryl Kirkland recorded me, and Jim Tetlow made the video.
Maria is the seeing and ‘seaing’ of the Moon.
Maria is plural for ‘mare’, which is Italian/Latin for sea.
Early astronomers said the maria ‘seas’ of the moon were actual seas on the Moon.
Astronomers now say the ‘lunar maria’ are big basins created by asteroid impacts, a billion or more years ago.
Maria and I split up at the end of 1980 and we ceased all contact in about 1983, when, by telephone, we very nearly got back together again.
I had missed the chance a few times prior. I was not ready for Maria.
When the student is ready the teacher appears (again perhaps).
Fast-forward to 2015.
Maria and I did not know whether each other was alive or dead, nor where in the world we might be.
I’d become a grandfather.
Maria had become the mother of a grown-up daughter and a teenage son.
My marriage had disintegrated, and so had my life.
Maria’s second marriage was nearly over.
We were both navigating very long divorces.
We’d each become stronger emotionally, physically and spiritually.
We seemed each on similar paths, perhaps in parallel universes.
Certainly to my mind we were in parallel universes and realities.
But we didn’t know these 35 years of mysteries about each other, when I felt compelled to find Maria, almost immediately after the suicide of my partner Liane from 2010-15.
It was as if Maria and I had manifested each other. Perhaps we did.
For a month Maria and I emailed only, until we arranged to speak on the phone.
Maria and I became lovers again later in 2015, and we broke up several times from then until now, and I still dream to be with Maria again, in ways that suit both of us, somewhere, somehow.
I think perhaps Maria has a similar dream.
You’d need to ask Maria.
You can find Maria very easily, because Maria and I work very closely together.
And you will learn a lot about everything from Maria.
Maria is the seeing of the Moon.
Our love is a soul thing, as love for anyone at its deepest is a soul thing.
Deeper than the deepest ocean imaginable.
Love is deeper than the deepest ocean imaginable for me.
I would die for Maria, and I continue to live because of Maria.
Rather like we all exist and live because of love.
Maria is the seaing of the Moon.
Soon I am moving to be much nearer to Maria.
By the sea.
We are getting there, wherever ‘there’ is, and whatever anything is.
Thanks. Love. Peace.
Maria Loony Toons by Alan Chapman (written 19-21 Oct 2019)
You are the seaing of the Moon
My dreams on Earth, my Loony Toons
My butterfly, cocoon – oh life that's come and gone so soon
Why stay or go away, make teas
And tumble stones or take the train
A croft or finca, Inca trail – be here at all, again
I am the wind your fire your Wounded Knee
Your heart's desire some smoky looking
Broken glass, kintsugi we are golden joinery
[Instrumental]
You are my days gone chains sore blues
And brothers' arms tattooed win lose
Or draw each breathless fusion till the Earth moves, dancing shoes on
We are the leaving of the trees
The blooms believing, wanna bee
And pools reflecting how we see, our soul a powered symphony
[Instrumental]
You are the seeing of the moon
My dreams on Earth, my Loony Toons
My butterfly, cocoon – oh life that's come and gone so soon
You are the seeing of the moon
My dreams on Earth, my Loony Toons
Here’s my songsheet for Maria Loony Toons, which is very much like I sang and recorded it.
Infinite love and gratitude to everyone, especially Maria.
Alan x
Beautiful song Alan.
Your words made me realise how lucky I am to have the most wonderful wife, the prettiest girl in town still to this day, 35 years married this year.
If you’re seaside venue is going to be North Wales we will likely meet up, I spend a lot of time there.
